暗視カメラがとらえた夜間砲撃の映像がテレビ中継されるなど、湾岸戦争（1990-1991）は戦争報道のあり方に大きな変化をもたらしました。このシリーズは戦争終結の翌年1992年に初めて公開されています。微光暗視装置を35mmフィルムカメラに取り付け、ルフはデュッセルドルフの街を撮りはじめました。ピンホール状にフレーミングされ、緑色の階調をもつ独特の画面は、湾岸戦争時、全世界に流布した「あの映像」を想起させると同時に、日常的な光景を底知れぬ恐怖を孕んだものへと変容させています。
The Gulf War (1990-1991) marked a huge change in media coverage of war due to the use of night-vision video cameras to capture night bombardments and other techniques. This series was first shown in 1992, the year after the end of the war. Attaching a low-light, night-vision apparatus to a 35mm camera, Ruff began shooting buildings, gardens, and other urban scenes of Düsseldorf. Framed in a pinhole, the distinctive pictures, with green gradations, recall the images that were circulated all over the world at the time of the Gulf War, while transforming ordinary scenes into something filled with unfathomable dread.
