新聞や週刊誌に掲載される写真には、通常、説明のための言葉が付けられていますが、ルフは、自ら収集した掲載写真からすべての文字要素を取り除き、画像のみを原寸幅の倍に引き伸ばしています。画像が本来の機能や文脈から切り離されたとき、私たちはその画像をどのように「読む」ことができるのでしょうか。また、このシリーズが1990年から91年にかけて制作されたことは、1989年のベルリンの壁崩壊やその翌年のドイツ再統一と無関係ではないでしょう。
Photographs that appear in newspapers and weekly magazines are usually accompanied by verbal explanations. But in this work, Ruff eliminated all of the written elements from a group of press photographs he had collected and blew the images up to double the actual size. When an image is deprived of its original function and context, how can we “read” it? The fact that these works were made in 1990 and 1991 means that they are inevitably linked to the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the reunification of Germany, which occurred the following year.
