Häuser

1987—1991
In Häuser, Ruff focuses on the exteriors of ordinary buildings such as housing complexes and corporate facilities. Like Interieurs, the series attempts to capture something distinctive through an accumulation of photographs in which a familiar environment was shot with a fixed approach. Here, Ruff deliberately set out to shoot ordinary buildings using the ordinary technique of architectural photography. What emerges from this doubling of “ordinary styles”? Using methods such as combining two negatives as needed, this work also marks Ruff’s first use of computer-based image processing.
